Treatment time: Depends on the procedure.
Anaesthetic: Yes
Recovery time: 24 hours
Key benefit: Induces feelings of deep relaxation during a dental procedure.
Suitable for: Virtually any dental procedure.
Conscious sedation breaks down the dental anxiety that might be standing in the way of you having dental treatment, inducing feelings of deep relaxation. In a matter of seconds, conscious IV (intravenous) sedation helps patients feel comfortable with their surroundings, and oblivious to factors that may have made them feel uneasy at the dentist, such as smells, sights, and sounds. When IV sedation begins to wear off, many patients remember very little of the procedure, despite being fully awake throughout.
FAQs
How Is IV Sedation Administered?
A small needle is placed on the back of the hand, via which the sedative is administered. A numbing cream is used, so you should not feel anything when the needle (cannula) is placed).
How Am I Monitored Throughout My Procedure?
The sedation dentist working alongside the dentist performing your treatment has the sole responsibility of keeping a close eye on you throughout. Your vitals, blood pressure, and reaction to the sedative are meticulously monitored the whole time you are in the chair.
What Happens After IV Sedation Wears Off?
Once the sedative wears off, you will feel a little drowsy, but there is no severe ‘hangover’ as there is after general anaesthesia. We advise patients to rest for 24 hours after their treatment. You will also need a responsible adult to drive you home after you leave the practice (we cannot perform your treatment if you arrive unaccompanied).
